Walkers are Welcome

In November 2011 Unst became the 71st community and the 1st ever island in the UK to become members of the Walkers are Welcome program. Obtaining this status strengthens the Island’s reputation as a place for visitors to come and enjoy the great outdoors. It also allows us to provide a great walking experience by ensuring that footpaths and facilities for walkers are maintained in good condition, benefiting local people and visitors for future generations. Being a key member in supporting this successful application, the Baltasound Hotel would like to extend a special welcome to our WAW guests by providing all necessities for a truly enjoyable trek.

Unst WAW has developed a range of walks to suit all abilities from a simple 2 mile walk round a nature reserve to a full on 60 mile round Unst Trek. The different walks take in a wide choice of interests from wildlife to Viking heritage, Shetland Geopark and cafe stops. Below you will find three of our favourite walks close by the hotel.

All accommodation centres have a key role in providing the comfort and enjoyment of visitors to our Island. Our membership of WAW calls for the guests to be provided the opportunity of a meal or sandwiches and a hot drink on arrival, drying facilities for clothing and boots after a day’s walking, a weather forecast for each day on reception. Visitors will find a 70 page walks director in each reception area. All Accommodation centres, visitor attractions and shops display the WAW logo sheets.
