About Us

The tradition of hospitality at Britain’s most northerly hotel extends back several decades, although its history on Unst began in the 1860’s. Originally built as the Springfield Estate, the main building of the complex was converted to the Springfield Hotel in 1939. The cabins and an extension to the hotel were added in the following decades as the hotel passed through several hands. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that it acquired the name it is known by today: The Baltasound Hotel.

What brought us to Unst was our love of the Shetland Isles. Its nature, history and heritage are all abundant here on Unst. Purchasing and managing the Baltasound Hotel since 2008, our family’s vision for it is to create a comfortable place for people to gather and truly feel at home at the furthest north edge of Britain. We have built our business on the philosophy that we must daily strive to ensure that our guests have everything they need during their visit, such as clean rooms, comfortable beds, fresh meals prepared by our expert chef, packed lunches for long walks or access to any kind of information about Unst. Simply put, we feel that each of our guests deserves the same hospitality we would offer a member of our own family. Each time you visit us, look for new improvements we’ve made for your stay to be more enjoyable!

The hotel accommodations primarily consist of cozy pine log cabins with a private deck, allowing for an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, drink a cup of coffee at the start of a day or linger with a glass of wine as you watch the long summer sunsets. If you prefer more traditional hotel accommodations, you'll be happy to know that we have recently renovated all of our inner bedrooms adjacent to the lounge. As part of this renovation, we have created two new spacious doubles, perfect for families looking for that extra bit of room.

With our many years of experience and a long tradition of great customer service, we look forward to welcoming you as a guest.
